Hello my name is Las and I have just bought myself a colt 2002 1.3
All though my first choice was supposed to have been a honda civic .
These colts are getting harder and harder to find that I also love so when I went to see this car my emotions got the better of me I should have walked away with the condition of the body work not a single panel on the car without a dent or a scratch I am thinking to myself I buy it like a project and do it up...big mistake here is just a few of the problems come across after just 1 week.
1
I bought the car needing a tire so when taking the car to my local tire place the young lad noticed something wet underneath the car .after further inspection the sump must have had a leak so its been patched up with what looks like silicon .got a price for the replacement was £485 that I almost fainted I rang up euro car parts and they come back to me with the sump price alone £220+vat.
2
the amount of rust in the engine bay is shocking more than likely going to need the engine removed and engine bay treated to stop any further rust damage .
3
i was just driving home and engine management like came on i thought it was alternator light but its not it also has a screeching belt dunno if thats anything to do with it.

Your probably thinking was I blind buying the car I should have checked it out better and its my own fault.

I must quote thow I only paid a monkey for the car is it worth keeping orhall I get rid of it and count my loses i do like the car and i have a image of what the car could look like .
Alot of nasty rust on the car i cant see it lasting another 10 years unless treated to try save it.
what you think guys

Welcome along.

First of all if there's rust, you're going to want to get under the rear of the car and check the chassis rails, especially to the sides of the fuel tank. They have a habit of getting really rusty and it will be an MOT fail due to the rear seatbelts securing to the car near them.

Personally, if the overall body condition is poor then i'd imagine the underside is also likely to be, and trying to repair it is possible but will cost a fair bit unless you do it yourself, which will be a big job. If you join the ColtUK facebook group there's quite often people selling on there, and there's been some minters going for not a lot.

Colt's are cracking cars (I would say that ofc! I've had 4 of them now lol), but best off starting with one in good condition, then do the chassis/rust treatments and be safe in the knowledge it will last a long time.

Hi thank you for the reply I did look underneath the car and noticed a bar that runs from the front bumper the bottom of the bulk head looks like the front of it has been welded.
Other than that I can't see much more rust other than what's in the engine bay .
What is worring me me the most is the engine management light that's come on .i went to euro car parts and bought a tool to plug in but it don't work works on my other car that's a volvo just having a lot of bad luck atm will take it tomorrow to have it diagnosed think the garage quoted me £30.
The last project car I owned was 1968 beetle and I don't remember having these many problems especially trying to get parts .

I see it this way if I could go back in time and stop all those owners that scrapped cars like the mk1 escorts Cos they riddled with rust but I can't .but I do feel I can stop myself and keep a bit of treasure for myself in the colt and the more people are scrapping these and breaking them are making them rare and eventually more sort after.

Best little diagnostic tool I bought was one of the bluetooth plug-in units, then bought the Torque app and use that to connect with it. About £15 in total and can do a lot with it, including clear error codes.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Panlong-Bluetooth-Car-DiagnosticTool-OBD2-Scanner-ELM-327-Check-Engine-Light-NEW/123201549053?epid=1872112645&hash=item1caf6272fd:g:6XsAAOSw9RdbKiT2:rk:1:pf:0

That bar is the gearbox support (north/south) bar, normally gets rusty as people end up scratching it on curbs etc.

I got the engine light sorted it turned out to be nothing to worry about .
I bought diagnosis machine from euro car parts that never worked and they won't give me money back ether to bad for me .
I am just trying to get the part number for my sump next that's proving to be difficult cos no way I am paying 220+vat for 1 they selling for 25 on ebay .

I rang my local friendly mitsubishi main dealer and spoke to parts department and the guy there asked me very rudely why I wanted the part number then asked for my number and never rang back .
